Morgan Hill, CA: 10/15 - Seventeen pilots awoke to wet streets as the rain started around 3am Saturday morning. However, by 8am we had clear sky's and almost no wind as we started this one-day pattern contest. The wind increased substantially during the day but for those at Landcaster the week before, we laughed at this little breeze! Dave Wick lost his little electric Focus due to pilot error - it will be missed.. WAIT - it will fly again at Fresno! Luke Peng, our CD, kept the lines moving and we had finished 4 rounds by 3pm. Chris and Tom kept things very interesting in Advanced and the outcome was not known until the last round. Tom Messer edged out Chris Fitzsimmons by 28 points. Don Atwood needed only 3 rounds to win FAI and elected to not fly the last round. Scott Covey won 4 rounds in Masters with Frank Capone taking 2nd. Scott MacAfee won 3 of the 4 rounds in Intermediate, and in Sportsman, Chris Belden won all 4 rounds.

LANCASTER, CA: 10/8 and 10/9 - Twenty Three pilots converged on Lancaster to once again test their pattern skills and have a little fun. Friday's weather was great.. but not a sign of things to come for Contest Saturday! You would have loved Saturday if you were flying stunt kites - strong winds challenged pilots to center the maneuvers and keep the planes 'in the box'. There was a brief discussion of stopping the contest after round 1 as the winds were increasing.. but we pushed forward for a second round. After round 2, there was no hope as pilots scrambled to pack their planes away as a small sand-storm was approaching. Continued

SACRAMENTO, CA: 10/1 and 10/2 - Contestants from as far as Canada and Oregon came to test their pattern skills and support Frank Capone (CD) & Bob Obregon (Asst CD) for the 16th annual Bud Garric Pattern Classic. As the first day shaped up, the pilots found the crosswinds challenging but it was the Advanced Class that had some drama brewing. Chris Fitzsimmons and Tom Messer had each won a round, each by less than 4 points, and were going into round 3 when ...Continued

HOLLISTER, CA: 9/10 and 9/11 - Lorie Whitacre and Jon Carter (CD) present Scott Covey (left) with the Bob Whitacre Memorial trophy. It's given out at the Hollister contest each year to the pilot that wins his or her class by the fewest points. Scott won Masters this year by 25 points over Jerry Budd. Rusty Fried from Arizona was always in the hunt, coming in 3rd, only 55 points (out of 4000) behind Jerry. Scott and Bob flew together in many contests and were good friends.
